Mindil Beach

For a group with a complex list of influences, Mindil Beach is simply named after a coastline in Darwin, Australia. Through the skillful blending of rock, hip hop, reggae, funk and folk, they've created sonic cocktail that is equal parts soul, adrenaline and swagger. Their diversity of appeal has enabled them to play alongside a wide variety of notable acts (Sam Roberts, USS, Bedouin Soundclash), but no matter the size of the venue, every Mindil Beach show feels like you're dancing in your living room.

After the release of their sophomore record, It Might Take Long (2013), Mindil Beach found themselves at a crossroads. Local success of the album's lead single, Smoking Gun, served as a springboard for national exposure, and they opted to leave Vancouver Island for a more nomadic lifestyle. After spending nearly a year in an RV, Mindil Beach have now put down roots in Vancouver and are working on their third full length album.

The band’s passion for music goes hand in hand with their passion for the environment. In 2011, the boys founded The Jellyfish Project, an environmental initiative targeting Canadian high school and middle school students to generate awareness about ocean sustainability, climate change and environmental stewardship. The program has been presented in more than 100 schools to over 50,000 students, and has partnered with the Vancouver Aquarium and the David Suzuki Foundation.

They've been called “a group that can fly the flag for Canadian rock overseas” and they intend to do so. Mindil Beach will be celebrating the release of their latest project, The Sweet Tea EP, at Victoria Ska & Reggae Fest on July 1st.

Friday, December 5th at Lucky Bar Victoria BC Ska & Reggae Society is proud to present our last show of 2025 with longtime friends Mindil Beach who will return to perform in Victoria for the first time in over 10 years.

They'll be joined by their longtime friends Deep Sea Gypsies and Ska & Reggae Society alumni Blackwood Kings.

The saying "Better Late than Never" in Mindil Beach's situation would be better categorized as "never say never." That's because Mindil Beach (formerly Mindil Beach Markets) have been on quite a roller coaster ride during their run as an active band. With their late great beloved leader Daniel Kingbury the band toured throughout BC and other parts of Canada. They were actively promoting environmental stewardship in schools throughout BC with their Jellyfish Project and they headlined and played as support on big shows and festivals throughout Western Canada (including Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival). Now led by Roderick Campbell the band is finishing an album they started 10 years ago called "Vol III" and will finally perform the material they invested their energy into a decade ago.

For those of you that are new to Mindil Beach they have a west coast sound that mixes a bit of rock, folk, funk, hip hop and reggae.

Deep Sea Gypsies who will be playing just before Mindil Beach describe themselves as a combination of 60’s psych blues rock and 70’s southern rock mixed with elements of funk and soul. Their influences include the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Muddy Waters and more.

And finally for the Island ska/reggae faithful we have Blackwood Kings. Blackwood Kings have been playing for almost a decade and a half in our scene. Their last appearance was at Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival opening for Jakobs Castle (ft. Jakob Nowell of Sublime), Long Beach Dub All Stars and Mad Professor. They will be coming to bring us their signature brand of ska and reggae straight-up.

Doors are 7pm/ Curfew is 11pm.
